A invenção dos patins sobre rodas começou de maneira curiosa. Em 1750, um belga chamado Joseph Merlin teve a idéia de construir patins que pudessem andar no solo assim como os patins de gelo deslizavam no gelo. Após várias experiências, Merlin conseguiu criar os patins com rodas, com apenas uma roda em cada pé. Assim que a invenção ficou pronta, o inventor resolveu fazer uma apresentação triunfal para mostrar sua obra à sociedade local. Ele era violinista e pretendia entrar em uma festa deslizando em seus patins e tocando violino pelo salão. E foi exatamente o que ele fez: em uma festa, ele calçou seu invento e entrou no salão, tocando seu violino. Como se não bastasse a dificuldade de se equilibrar em um patins desse tipo, que sequer tinham freios, Merlin também não era um grande patinador. É claro que o primeiro patinador sobre rodas da história não conseguiu parar, caindo sobre um espelho caríssimo, quebrando-o juntamente com seu violino. O primeiro a patentear os novos patins de rodas foi M. O Petitbled, na França, em 1819, e em seguida em 1823, Roberto John Tyers patenteou o modelo "Rollito". No documento da patente, o "Rollito" era descrito como sendo um "aparelho com rodas fixado aos sapatos, botas ou outro elemento que cubra o pé, com o propósito da necessidade de locomoção e lazer". O "Rollito" foi feito com cinco rodas que se fixavam em linha reta. Chamou imediatamente a atenção do público, e a partir daí não parou de se sofisticar. Apesar de chamarem a atenção do público, demorou algum tempo até que os patins sobre rodas realmente conquistassem o gosto popular. Na Alemanha, por exemplo, ele somente foi aceito em 1840. Na época, uma loja atraia os clientes, colocando meninos e meninas sobre patins para atendê-los.
Atualidade dos patins
Atualmente os patins tradicionais se encontram bastante sofisticados, podendo um equipamento de primeira linha custar o equivalente a alguns milhares de dólares. Sua utilização é mais frequente em competições de nível nacional e internacional em países como E.U.A., Portugal, Espanha,Itália, Austrália, China, Argentina e Brasil. Popularmente os patins mais utilizados e conhecidos são os patins inline ou inline skates (com três, quatro ou mais rodas em linha reta) que além de chamar a atenção de jovens e crianças, é considerado um meio alternativo de transporte.
