A data foi instituída em 1988, cinco anos depois de a Volkswagen ter reconhecido oficialmente o apelido "Fusca". Na verdade, os membros do Seda Club, que depois se tornou Fusca Club, queriam comemorar o dia em 20 de novembro, mas como houve um atraso na preparação da festa, ela acabou sendo adiada para o dia 20 de janeiro, para aproveitar os adesivos que já tinham sido impressos com a data. Em 1996, a cidade de São Paulo instituiu a mesma data como o Dia Municipal do Fusca.
