Círio Pascal - Paschal Candle

É o símbolo mais destacado do Tempo Pascal. A palavra "círio" vem do latim "cereus", de cera. O produto das abelhas. O círio mais importante é o que é aceso na vigília Pascual como símbolo de Cristo – Luz, e que fica sobre uma elegante coluna ou candelabro enfeitado.

O Círio Pascal é já desde os primeiros séculos um dos símbolos mais expressivos da vigília. Em meio à escuridão (toda a celebração é feita de noite e começa com as luzes apagadas), de uma fogueira previamente preparada se acende o Círio, que tem uma inscrição em forma de cruz, acompanhada da data do ano e das letras Alfa e Omega, a primeira e a última do alfabeto grego, para indicar que a Páscoa do Senhor Jesus, princípio e fim do tempo e da eternidade, nos alcança com força sempre nova no ano concreto em que vivemos. O Círio Pascal tem em sua cera incrustado cinco cravos de incenso simbolizando as cinco chagas santas e gloriosas do Senhor da Cruz.

Na procissão de entrada da Vigília se canta por três vezes a aclamação ao Cristo: "Luz de Cristo. O Círio Pascal também é usado durante os batismos e as exéquias, quer dizer no princípio e o término da vida temporal, para simbolizar que um cristão participa da luz de Cristo ao longo de todo seu caminho terreno, como garantia de sua incorporação definitiva à Luz da vida eterna.
